Tagore's birth anniversary means an annual event to remember him

Today is the birth anniversary of Rabindra Nath Tagore. He was a genius and his literary offerings ranged from poems, travelogue, novels, short stories, dance drama and, of course, songs - it was a special brand of song named Rabindra sangeet, after him. And - every Bengali girl, wherever she may be, must be able to sing his songs - or, at least, hum them.
In West Bengal, people offer their homage to Gurudev as he is lovingly called - and a series of day long cultural programs are held starting from the locality-level clubs to the top social and cultural organizations.
This has been reported in zeenews.india.com dated 8 May 2016.
The celebration begins in Santiniketan right from early morning and the day long celebrations include enactment of his dance dramas and will continue till late in the evening. In Kolkata, the homage program takes place at his ancestral home in Jorasanko - it now houses the Rabindra Bharati University. Here, the program will be a session of Rabindra Sangeet. The State government will be officially paying respects to the poet through a cultural evening at Rabindra Sadan where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and leaders of various parties in the State will pay their respects to the poet.
Novels of Tagore have been made into movies not only for the Bengali audience but also for the global audience with Bollywood heroines playing lead roles.
