Alphonso mango, the King of Fruits, make its appearance in Mumbai

This season's first batch of Alphonso mangoes has made its appearance in the APMC wholesale market in Vashi - it will cater to the Mumbai market and also go in for export. At present, around 5,000 boxes of green, raw Alphonso mangoes are arriving daily in the wholesale market from Deogarh, Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri and Raigad.
These are priced at a premium Rs 400-1,000 per dozen at the APMC but, the retailers are selling them at Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 per dozen in the Mumbai metropolitan region. The high cost are attributed to wastages in the ripening process.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 11 March 2016.
On the price front, wholesalers predict that once the supply doubles, the price will ease. Over 10,000 boxes are expected to hit the market and, with each box holds at least six dozen. Out of the total supplies received at APMC, 20% is earmarked for export. Last year, when the Alphonso hit the market, the price was Rs 300- Rs 1,000. This year, after deliberations, the traders, exporters and farmers, have fixed the rate at Rs 400 - Rs 1,000 a dozen in the wholesale market. Exporters have begun to send shipments to the Gulf, a major market for Indian mangoes, compared to the European Union.
