Bengal looks to Japan for building tourism and industries in Howrah


Right now, a Japanese team is in Kolkata studying various development options in Howrah. The team from Japan's Yokohama Municipality is on a two-day visit and will assess possibilities of funding civic and infrastructure projects. The projects discussed by representatives of the two civic bodies included a medium and small-scale industries hub, a water treatment plant and a tourism scheme.

The Howrah Municipal Corporation had made a presentation before the visitors regarding a proposal related to technology transfer and funding for several projects. One of these is a 250-acre plot in Pinjrapole, on Gosala Road in Bally, for setting up a medium and small-scale industry hub. this land is believed to be a part of the Land Bank of the government.
The Japanese team is accompanied by officials of the Asian Development Bank, World Bank and private companies and, apparently,they are not averse to funding projects worth Rs 550 crore.
The proposed water treatment plant that the two sides discussed would have a capacity of 100 million gallon daily and come up on the Padmapukur Waterworks campus.
As far as efforts to boost tourism, the two sides discussed a proposal to build a ropeway from Ramakrishnapur Ghat or Botanical Garden Ghat to Belur and Dakshineswar. The subject of flyovers in Howrah was also discussed.
