This has been reported in nzherald.co.nz dated 20 September 2015.
Hamilton Zoo, founded in 1969, is located on a 25ha site in the northwest suburb of Rotokauri. It is a game farm and owned by Hamilton City Council. It is understood that there are two zoo keepers, one male one female, who are in charge of the Tigers. Other zoo staff also help when required.
Flowing the tragedy, the zoo has been closed and zoo-goers told to leave the facility. The zoo did not appear to be too busy because there were fewer than a dozen vehicles in the car park.
As a witness has revealed, he saw a female keeper open the gates so the tigers could access an outside area of the enclosure not long before the attack happened.
Tragedies like this are not new – while the zoo keepers usually have good relations with their animals and there are safeguards, no one can predict sudden changes in behavior patterns of the animals. They can attack at any time and result in such tragedies.
