Night-out culture not acceptable for Indian girls, says culture minister

Another ban seems to be in the offing as has been indicated by the Union Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma. He has apparently opened his mind out on a private TV channel when he said that girls wanting a night out may be all right elsewhere but it is not part of Indian culture.
This 54-year-old is a first time MP from Noida and has been in the news for a comments which have been decried by opponents as "regressive" and an "assault on India's composite culture".
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 19 September 2015.
Such attempts at cultural cleansing is difficult to comprehend in a modern society where schools and colleges are co-educational, where movies showcase youth enjoying at all levels and where access to social media is unrestricted.
Of course, this is not new because there have been instances of groups who are dedicated to the cause of cultural cleansing – they have disrupted Valentine’s Day celebrations, they have punished boys and girls by making them do sit-ups in public if seen together in parks and have also not hesitated to attack young pairs seen in bars.
Leaders need to accept the fact that the 21st century is more liberal than the 19th or even 20th century and, with the exposure to the world, notions have changed.
Trying to impose bans on personal choices like what to wear, what to eat, where to go are ridiculous but, then, leaders will be leaders and continue to talk in order to remain in the limelight. They must realize that India is a vast country and the Indian society is woven on a fabric woven with threads of a wide variety of colors. Let us preserve that.
