Stalked by upper caste youths, a 16-year-old Dalit girl of Sangrur sets herself on fire

The 16-year-old Dalit girl of Sangrur, who wanted to become a doctor, set herself on fire because she was being stalked by a group of four upper caste youths for over a fortnight as she was on her way to school. The girl has suffered 75% burns and is now fighting for her life.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 11 August 2015.
She had immolated herself on August 5, but the incident was revealed when she confided to her brother from her hospital bed. She had taken such a drastic step because she was unable to submit to the daily harassment by four youths on her way to school.
They used to pass comments, chase and surround her. She did not tell her parents since she felt that her family would stop her from going to school and she wanted to study and become a doctor.
This, unfortunately, is the way girls are humiliated – and, is an effect of what Bollywood dishes out in the name of entertainment. Scenes of boys chasing girls on the roads, surrounding her on their bikes is common. Of course, the girl on the screen is a heroine and, soon after the chase, they break out into songs.
The effect of such movies in real life is what has happened in Sangrur. (Image courtesy wikimediacommons.org)
