Spanish resort imposes fine on ‘beach hoggers’ who reserve spots by putting towels

A Spanish resort in Torrox on the Costa del Sol is introducing a system of imposing fines on tourists who reserve their sunbathing spots by putting towels on the sand. The beach police patrol has been told to confiscate property left on the beach by these ‘beach hoggers’ and, the owners can reclaim the items by paying a fee of 30 euros (£21).
This has been reported in bbc.com dated 9 August 2015.
People complain that when they arrive at the beach they find all the space taken by towels and umbrellas, but there are hardly any people – obviously, they reserve the spots by putting the towels. However, the new policy has achieved the desired result and there is less wasted space on the beach and more room for everyone.
The bylaw of allowing police to confiscate towels and other items had been introduced last year, but only around a dozen lots of beach gear were confiscated in August and September 2014. In comparison, this year more than 30 seizures have been made till now.
