‘Nemo’s Garden’ in Italy experimenting with growing vegetables under the sea

Drought conditions in different parts of the world make it difficult to grow fruits and vegetables in the normal way and poses major challenges for farmers. Therefore, to circumvent such a situation, a group of Italian divers have come up with a viable alternative. It is underwater cultivation and they have already had success – the have produced basil, coriander, strawberries, lettuce, and beans and are now experimenting with various fruits and vegetables.
This has been reported in foxnews.com dated 24 July 2015.
The project has been started by the Italy-based Ocean Reef Group. They have built small transparent balloons in the Mediterranean Sea and, inside the structures are fitted a ring of vases with seeds to see how they would grow. The project has partnered with World Expo 2015 in Milan.
The internal layout of the garden in the bubble makes the plants self-sustaining. There is natural evaporation inside the biosphere which creates natural and fresh water – this water evaporates, condenses, and finally rains on the plants.
The team wants to come up with a true alternative to traditional agriculture.
