World Environment Day 2015 – does our responsibility end with planting trees and photo ops

#WorldEnvironmentDay2015 #7BillionDreams #NoPlastic Come 5th of June and people wake up to celebrate World Environment Day (WED) – the awareness ends with celebrities planting saplings and associated photo ops to prove that we are serious about protecting the environment.
This has been reported in zeenews.com dated 5 June 2015.
Planting of trees is fine. It absorbs the carbon dioxide that we breathe out and converts it to oxygen that we inhale. Moreover, trees help to bind the soil and prevent its erosion. This is important especially inn hilly regions because due to felling of trees in mountains, the topsoil loosens and when heavy showers occur, there are mud slides that wipe away villages.
But, no one is too much bothered about controlling plastic wastes that are biologically non degradable and are harmful to the environment. Shopkeepers merrily stuff the veggies and fruits we purchase in the plastic carry bags and we just throw the carry bags away once we empty the contents into our fridge or in containers.
Another major enemy of a healthy environment is the pollution – mostly from the burnt fuel that belch out from the exhausts of vehicles. The number of vehicles is on the rise as is the pollution factor. This sort of pollution adds to, what is known as, global warming and this has a cascading effect on life.
Global warming results in the melting of the polar caps which, in turn, gives rise to the sea levels. And, to floods that kills people. And, plays havoc with marine life.
World Environment Day is to create awareness about the importance of protecting planet Earth and Mother Nature. On this occasion, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) calls on nations to do something positive for the environment on World Environment Day.
Incidentally, the theme for 2015 is “Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care".
