Petrol station blast leaves at least 150 dead in Accra – three days of mourning declared

An explosion occurred in a petrol station in Accra, the capital of Ghana, when floodwaters swept stored fuel into a nearby fire resulting in an explosion in which at least 150 are believed to have been killed.
This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 4 June 2015.
Fortunately, the fire did not spread to the Kwame Nkrumah Circle area and there are doubts that the fire might have spread from a nearby home or lorry terminal.
A witness has said that many of those who died had taken shelter under a shed at the station because of two days of torrential rain due to which many parts of the city had been waterlogged, submerged and people were stranded.
President John Dramani Mahama has indicated that Ghana would observe three days of mourning for the victims. An amount of about £7m would also be allocated for relief operations and for repairing the damaged infrastructure.
President Mahama has described the accident as "catastrophic and almost unprecedented" while Communications minister Edward Omane Boamah has described the situation as a "national emergency".
