New Hampshire bans use of chocolates to lure bears for 2015 hunting season

New Hampshire has banned the use of chocolate to lure bears for the 2015 hunting season – however, the hunters can use alternates like donuts, pastries and other baked goods that contain small amounts of chocolate to attract the animals.
Thus has been reported in nzherald.co.nz dated 14 May 2015.
The reason for the ban is that chocolates contain an ingredient called theobromine and this is toxic to some animals if ingested in large doses. It seems four bears have died due to this because, for years, chocolate has been used as bait to attract bears for hunting.
The New Hampshire Fish and Game Commission has granted approval to the new rule after the death of the bears. Black bear hunters are permitted to use bait to lure the animals and may kill only one bear each during a calendar year.
Incidentally, a full ban on the use of chocolate will become effective in 2016. The imposition of the ban was kept in abeyance for a year to appease hunters who have already stocked up on chocolate bait for the 2015 season. The season begins in September.
