Child labor no longer taboo in India – minors can work in non-hazardous jobs

The Narendra Modi cabinet gas lifted the ban on child labor and has granted approval to an amendment to the Child Lobar Act and, by virtue of this amendment, children above the age of 14 can work in family run non-hazardous industries.
This has been reported in zeenews.india.com dated 14 May 2015.
It has been explained that bearing in mind the social fabric and socio-economic conditions prevailing in the country, the decision has been taken so that families where such children earn money to help out its family can get a moral boost.
The clarification goes on to add that in many families, children help their parents in their occupations like agriculture, artisanship etc and, while doing so, they learn the basics of occupations.
Under the circumstances, in order to strike a balance between the need for education of the child and the reality of the socio-economic condition and social fabric in the country, the Cabinet has approved the proposal. A child can now help his family or family enterprise, which is other than any hazardous occupation or process, after his school hours or during vacation.
The intentions of the changes are fine. Shoeshine boys, helpers in restaurants do not work in hazardous jobs – they should get more enthusiasm to work without fears of being apprehended. Only, they should do such work after school hours and, the enterprise should be family run.
