Neanderthals were fashion conscious – 150,000-years-old necklace found in Croatia

#neanderthal #croatia #eagleclaws #homosapiens Fashion is not a new concept, it was there even in the Neanderthal days and the finding if jewelry of those days in Croatia goes to prove that those people also loved to show off their jewelry – this has been reported in nzherald.co.nz dated 13 March 2015.
Of course, whether they cat-walked on any ramp is not known but it can be presumed that they must have had such events to display their wares. These were made out of talons of white-tailed eagles and is proof that the early human species had an aesthetic sensibility.
The find is of eight claws found from at least three different eagles. These were made into a necklace or bracelet. This unique piece of jewelry was made 80,000 years before the first Homo sapiens emerged in Europe.
In the opinion of David Frayer, a professor of anthropology at the University of Kansas, this discovery indicates that the Neanderthal man was not all brutish but, he had the ability of careful planning apart from the ability to recognize the importance of body ornaments.
The eight talons were discovered along with a foot bone – these were once attached to each other by some sort of a string or thread. In addition to 21 individual cut marks, the talons have polished surfaces that must have been a result of one talon rubbing against another.
Davorka Radovcic, curator of the Croatian Natural History Museum in Zagreb, has termed the find as an unexpected one.
