Among the dead were two French Olympians. They were Camille Muffat, who won an Olympic gold medal in swimming at the London 2012 games, Olympic boxer Alexis Vastine and champion sailor Florence Arthaud. They were engaged in filming for the series "Dropped" near Villa Castelli in La Rioja province.
This show involves eight sports stars who were being dropped into inhospitable environments.
57-year-old Florence Arthaud was considered one of the best sailors in the world and had won the 1990 Route du Rhum. 25-year-old Camille Muffat had won gold in the 400-metre freestyle in 2012 along with two other medals. 28-year-old Alexis Vastine had won a bronze medal at the Beijing games in 2008 in the light welterweight category.
As per information, they were in two helicopters and were flying over Quebrada El Yeso and Quebrada Condado in the mountainous region when the accident took place.
One of the helicopters was from La Rioja and it was a Eurocopter with a capacity to hold six people. It seems a cast and crew of around 80 people were in the area to film the series for which shooting had begun in February in Ushuaia, at the southern tip of Argentina. Subsequently, it shifted base to La Rioja.
The deaths have been confirmed by police officials – the dead include eight French nationals and their two Argentine pilots. The government of La Rioja has confirmed the identities of the three athletes.
