Tatanagar station to instal cold water vending machines - Rs 3 per liter

Tatanagar is an A1 station and hosts a number of high-profile trains like the New Delhi-bound Rajdhani Express, Howrah-Mumbai Duronto Express and Puri-New Delhi Purushottam Superfast Express. I order to make ice cold water available to passengers of these trains and others who travel through Tatanagar, plans are afoot to provide water vending machines. The cost would be reasonable - one liter would cost only Rs 3 if a passenger has his or her own bottle. An extra amount of Rs 2 will be charged if someone needs chilled and bottled water.

An average of 50,000 people travel through the station every day and the pure and chilled drinking water facilities on platforms two, three, four and five at pocket-friendly price would come as a boon to them. The facilities would be equipped with RO (reverse osmosis) purifiers. Platform One already has such a water purifier - it had been installed last July. The facility is being extended to other platforms.
However, while passengers have welcomed the initiative, shopkeepers who sell packaged drinking water on platforms are apprehensive of a drop in their business.

Very soon scuba diving lessons would come to Dimna Lake in Tatanagar

Very soon one can expect to get scuba diving lessons in the Dimna Lake in Tatanagar. The Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF) plans to add diving, including scuba, to its Dimna Lake Water Sports Centre curriculum. It was set up in December 2013 and already conducts training in boating, rowing, canoeing and surfing.

TSAF, the premier adventure outfit, plans to rope in a noted diver as the chief instructor who is already mentoring his colleagues at Tata Steel security department and the company's fire brigade. Diving lessons in Dimna Lake would begin shortly. It will allow people of Jamshedpur to experience the thrill of underwater adventure and will be a new activity at the water sports centre.
The fee structure and diving schedule have already been worked out - it will be Rs 200 per person for half-an-hour dive. To start with, the activity will be conducted on Sundays (10am to 1pm) and, depending on the response, it could be extended to a daily affair.

Indian Railways declare 60 stations as plastic free

Indian Railways have taken a laudable step in 60 stations to make them plastic free - these stations are under the Chakradharpur railway division and include Tatanagar in Jharkhand and Rourkela in Odisha. The division has a total of 77 stations under its charge and out of these, 60 have been declared free from the menace of plastics.

This was possible after a month-long drive throughout January against the use of plastics and littering at these 60-odd stations which have catering units and food stalls. The stations of Tatanagar, Rourkela, Chakradharpur and Jharsuguda have yielded positive results and, after a thorough review, the division has been declared as a plastic-free zone. These 60 stations are commercial stations which have catering stalls and vendors also put up their food stalls.
The use of plastic cups and glasses, polythene bags and thermocol cups and glasses have been completely banned at catering units and food stalls. Mineral water will continue to be sold in plastic bottles but, passengers would have to throw empty bottles and snacks and biscuit packets in designated dustbins.
As an alternative to plastics, paper bags and other paper products will be promoted on railway premises - these are eco-friendly and do not have environment or health hazards.
Severe penalty would be levied on violators - to have suitable checks on stall owners and catering units on platforms, spot fines ranging from between Rs 500 to Rs 5,000 are proposed depending on the seriousness of offense.
