Don’t be afraid of the potato – it can help you control weight

#eathealthy Don’t be afraid of the potato because, the concept that potatoes contribute to the bulging waistline, appears to now be a thing of the past. That can be discarded because scientists have, now, arrived at the decision that the potato, believed to be the nightmare of dieticians, is actually a great help to reduce a few kilos.
The vegetable is being labeled as "the miracle ingredient to fight obesity".
It seems extract of Irish potatoes, which are rich in polyphenols, have been found to reduce weight gain from a diet that is high in fat and refined carbohydrates – this is based on research conducted by scientists at McGill University. The researchers were surprised at the findings and, hence, repeated the experiment just to be sure.
Based on this study it can be sad that potato extracts could be a solution to prevent both obesity and type 2 diabetes. The investigators feel that the potato extract could be made available as a dietary supplement or simply as a cooking ingredient to be added in the kitchen.

Potato chips – the symbol of modern day lifestyle

When the price of potato increases, the government of the day gets uncomfortable because this vegetable is indispensable for Indians irrespective of the region he hails from and the electronic media seizes the opportunity to rope in celebrities to have their say – we have seen it any number of times.
However, no one bothers much if the price of a pack of potato chips increases. In fact, those who munch the delicacies seldom feel the pinch.
At another level is the couch potato – this is a term coined in recent years to aptly describe an addict of the Idiot Box! His world revolves around the couch and the remote. He loves to curl up on the couch and stray away only for brief moments to attend to other more necessary and mandatory duties like having his lunch, dinner, releasing excess pressure etc.
Potato is believed to have come to India in the 17th century and, in many Indian languages, it is called ‘aloo’. The incident happened in 1997 Sahara Cup in faraway Canada, where Pak cricketer Inzamaam ul-Huq was called ‘aloo’ by a spectator and the ruckus it subsequently created is still not erased from memory.
This multi-purpose vegetable called potato can be readily converted into any number of eatables in the hands of experts.
Let us start with the simplest – the potato chips.
Sliced into wafer thin pieces after peeling and cleaning, these are allowed to soak in a salt solution and then deep fried. These miraculously transform into crispy chips – a heavenly delight, as some may say.
In olden days, when the matinee and evening shows attracted young and old alike to the cinema halls, sharing a packet of potato chips inside the darkened hall trying to ensure that the sound of munching did not distract others, posed a tremendous challenge. If you had persons of the fairer sex for company, it was all the more necessary to suppress their giggles because girls have a habit of giggling whenever something unusual happens. In this case, trying to stifle the munching sound, when a certain amount of sound is inevitable!!
Today, the scene in a multiplex is not much different. Potato chips are disbursed in attractive packages and marketed via the electronic visual media with the help of popular personalities who keep trying out new story lines to bring home the point that – ‘nobody can eat just one!’ The amount of money spent on such ads could provide full lunch for a couple of villages in Andhra or Orissa for at least a few days.
But, then, this is the world of consumerism and glamour plays a vital role in promoting the goodies. Many cannot afford such luxuries but the central idea is to create a desire for such products. That itself is half the battle won. Once a desire is created, the individual is bound to discover ways and means of fulfilling that desire. That is the second half of the battle!
