Yellowstone to kill 1000 wild bisons to check migration into Montana

In order to keep a check on wild bison moving out of the Yellowstone National Park and migrating to Montana during winter, a decision has been taken to kill 1000 animals, mostly calves and females. This year's proposal puts more emphasis on killing females and calves to reduce the population's reproductive rate.

Accordingly, officials of the Park would meet representatives of American Indian tribes, the state and other federal agencies to take a final decision and draw up the plan. This plan would be a continuation of a controversial agreement made in 2000 between Montana and the federal government that was meant to prevent the spread of the disease brucellosis from bison to livestock.
Incidentally, almost 5,000 bison roamed Yellowstone during the summer and thousands of them could be driven into southwestern Montana in case of harsh winters. Hunters, who include members of tribes with treaty rights in the Yellowstone area, are expected to kill more than 300 of the animals this winter.
The park has one of the largest wild bison herds in the world and, since the 1980s, more than 6,300 have been slaughtered, and almost 1,900 killed by hunters.

Wildfire playing havoc with America – tourism affected in Montana

America is in the grip of a wildfire and tourists are fleeing to safety and hundreds of homes in Montana and northern California are under threat. Both these states have been ravaged by drought and rising temperatures and the string winds are hindering fire crews from battling the blazes in the northern Rocky Mountains.

One blaze has apparently burnt down more than six square miles along the eastern edge of Glacier National Park in Montana and this is the height of tourist season there. The fire broke out and has swept along ridges near the park's most popular roadway called as the 'Going To The Sun Road'. 21 miles of this road have been shut.
Approximately 700,000 people had visited the park in July last year and nearly 95% of them had made use of at least some part of the road.
Moreover, campers numbering more than 600 campers have had to leave a site near the small town of St Mary because officials have converted the camping ground to serve as a staging area to tackle the fire.
The blaze in California has threatened 200 homes and ranches outside the Napa Valley and has spread to more than 10.5 square miles. As a result, US Highway 50 has been shut in both directions between Sacramento and Reno, Nevada.
