Paper bag manufacturers in Bengalaru in a quandary

Bangalore has imposed a ban on plastic bags and the paper and cloth manufacturers are in a quandary and are not able to plan their strategy because there has not been any significant increase in orders. One of the reasons is that many retailers think the ban is a passing fancy and not likely to last for long.

One of the major paper bag manufacturing company in Bangalore that has a capacity to produce over two million paper bags a month and whose clients include big brands like Levi's, Flying Machine and Soch, has seen the number of enquiries increase. However, most of these do not end up into orders. Most retailers are not very confident that the ban will remain and, therefore, they place orders for very small numbers like 200-500 bags that will last for a week.
Similar is the situation in other paper bag manufacturers - all of them confirm that there was no significant increase in demand for paper bags.
In the opinion of an organization that makes jute and paper bags, the plastic ban could be more effective if consumers, rather than vendors, were targeted. People should be educated on the hazards of plastic, and the economic and environmental benefits of carrying their own cloth bags.

He was in need of money and, luckily for him, at the time, officials in the country had announced that they were considering a ban on plastic bags to curb environmental damage.
In 2008, Andrew Mupuya was still in secondary school and, with both his parents unemployed, he seized the opportunity to start a paper bag production company. He carried out a feasibility study, market research around retail shops, kiosks, supermarkets around Kampala and discovered there is need and potential market for paper bags.
Once he took off, there was no looking back. His business has grown extensively and today, at the age of 21, he is the owner of Youth Entrepreneurial Link Investments (YELI), the first registered Ugandan company to make paper bags.
He employs 16 people who produce up to 20,000 paper bags each week and his long list of clients includes restaurants, retail stores, supermarkets, medical centers, as well as multinational companies like Samsung -- YELI has made about 1,000 niche bags for the local stores of the electronics company.‎
He proudly says that right now he has 72 clients and most of them always come back.
