Sandalwood trees vandalised in Bangalore University

Sandalwood trees have been vandalised in the Jnana Bharathi campus of Bangalore University. Over the past two months, miscreants have stolen over a dozen of the sandalwood trees from the campus. In the latest incident, the stem of two sandalwood trees near the bio-park were stolen.

So far, at least 16 trees have been cut over the past two months. The authorities have lodged four different police complaints in this regard. They want the police to ensure that the culprits are caught and penalized. It is difficult for security guards to keep a watch because many early morning walkers come to the campus as early as 4.30 a.m.
It seems the “repeat” offenders have meticulously planned the stealing and are probably using electrical woodcutters. They have stolen the stem and left behind the branches.

Patna Zoo to instal electronic gates to restrict entry of morning walkers and joggers

Patna Zoo is probably the only zoo in the country where people come for early morning walks and for jogging. Therefore, a pass system is planned to be introduced at the Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, commonly known as Patna zoo. The intention is to to prohibit jogging at the zoo before sunrise and after sunset (early morning and late evening walks).
Right now, the zoo gates are open for joggers from 5.30am till 7pm and this adversely affects the nocturnal activities of animals and their breeding pattern.

Authorities have started procuring new electronic gates with radio-frequency readers and these will be installed at the zoo. The proposal of pass system is not new. It has been in the pipeline for quite some time. In fact, in 2011, the then deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi, who also held the portfolio of forests, had announced the introduction of the pass system. But, it could not be implemented due to protests from joggers.
The charges for monthly passes at that time were fixed at Rs 60 and Rs 150 for one and three months, respectively. The Central Zoo Authority CZA, had pointed out that no other zoo in the country allows morning walkers and suggested that Patna zoo be kept free of morning walkers. However, people from all walks of life and of various professions like politicians, bureaucrats, advocates, doctors, engineers, educationists, actors and youngsters, go for regular walks to the zoo.
