Hurricane Mathew set to strike Jamaica with winds of 155mph

More than 2,000 people have been shifted to shelters in Jamaica as Hurricane Matthew heads toward the island with wind speeds of 155mph. The country is on "high alert" and is preparing for the storm's arrival. The hurricane is currently off the northern coast of Colombia and Venezuela but is forecast to move northwest as per monitors in the US.
Jamaicans are stocking up on supplies of water and other food in case of a disaster.

Winds of this hurricane are gusting up to 155mph (250kph) and has made it one of the most powerful hurricanes in recent years. It had originally been categorized as a category 5 storm - the most powerful - but has weakened slightly as per the National Hurricane Center (NHC). Hurricane Matthew is one of the strongest storms to threaten the Caribbean since Hurricane Felix in 2007 - in that 150 people were killed and damages of $720m had been recorded.
Hurricane Joaquin that hit the region last year was a category 4 storm. It had struck the Bahamas, Bermuda, the Antilles and the Turks and Caicos and had resulted in damages of $120m and had killed 34. In case Matthew does strike Jamaica, it could be the worst to hit the island since Wilma. That had hit as a tropical depression in 2005 and caused $93m in damage.

The Jamaican cabinet has approved a bill that would decriminalize possession of small quantities of cannabis and gradually pave the way for a legal medical marijuana industry.
The bill would create a cannabis licensing authority that would handle the regulations necessary to cultivate, sell and distribute the herb for medical, scientific and therapeutic purposes. Jamaica wants to position itself suitable to take advantage of the significant economic opportunities that is offered by this emerging industry.
Under the terms of the proposed bill, the possession of 2 ounces or less would be treated as an offence but, it would not result in a criminal record. Permission would be given to cultivate maximum of five plants on any premises.
Rastafarians, who use marijuana as a sacrament, could also legally use it for religious purposes for the first time in Jamaica - the spiritual movement was founded in the 1930s.
Incidentally, the debate has raged on the Caribbean island for a long time over laws that govern use of marijuana and, with several countries and US states relaxing their laws on the herb, Jamaica plans to follow suit.
