Jamshedpur Angling Club organising fishing in Jubilee Park on July 29

To mark the 113th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna JRD Tata, the Jamshedpur Angling Club is organising a meet of anglers on July 29 from 6am to 5pm in Jayanti Sarovar, Jubilee Park. It is an annual event and the yield is expected to be satisfactory.

At a trial run, two members of the club netted over 15kg of rohu and participants can look forward to a weighty yield. At least 70 participants are expected from Calcutta, Kharagpur, Bhubaneswar, Ghatshila, Ranchi and Jamshedpur and entry fee will be Rs 1,200 each.
Accommodation will be arranged for those arriving from outstation. They will be accommodated inside a hall at Jusco's nursery near Tata Steel Zoological Park and tents, food and refreshment will be arranged for the participants. They will be provided with umbrellas and caps, and there will be awards. As a safety measure, use of chemicals in the baits will not be allowed.

Thieves are stealing fish from the Jayanti Sarovar in Jamshedpur

The Jayanti Sarovar located in the premises of the Tata Zoo in Jamshedpur is spread over 20-acre and large fish like rohu and katla flourish in the waters but thieves steal the prized catch at night and the anglers are a worried lot.
Mombers of the Jamshedpur Angling Club (JAC) have now formed squads of eight or ten enthusiasts who will provide coverage at night from 10pm to 4am. They have already been doing it for the last five days with members taking turns for night duty. They have obtained necessary from the local police.

The anglers complain that the security at the Tata zoo is very lax and private security guards of the zoo operate with the thieves, who enter the lake area from the zoo - the gates of Jubilee Park close at 9pm and reopen at 7am. It seems the thieves jump the zoo wall from the Marine Drive side and walk home with their booty by using the same route and are usually active between 12.30am and 2.30am.
Jamshedpur Angling Club (JAC)releases fingerlings into the lake every year but the stock keeps reducing drastically because of the theft.

Fish and Game have released 30 green-tagged fish in the Tarawera, Rotoiti and Okatania lakes for the opening of the angling season and lucky anglers could become $10,000 richer in case they can catch one of the special green-tagged fish. These have been released in the Rotorua lakes for the opening of the fishing season.

The tag numbers will correspond to cash prizes in sealed and numbered envelopes and, one of these envelopes contains the grand prize of $10,000. The Fish for Gold promotion will run until October 9.
Anglers were undeterred by overcast weather conditions and many boats were out on the lakes by mid-morning and one angler of Rotorua was one of the first to hook a green-tagged fish at Lake Tarawera. They hope it is the ten grand fish.
The biggest fish caught on the first day appeared to have been a 3.6kg rainbow that was landed in Lake Rotoiti. There wee a number of other fish that topped the three kilo mark.

Jamshedpur Angling Club (JAC) is all set to host a daylong angling competition in Jayanti Sarovar to mark the 112th birth anniversary of JRD Tata, the doyen of Indian industry. It is expected that around 60 anglers from Jamshedpur, Ranchi, Durgapur, Kharagpur, Ghatshila and Bhubaneswar will take part in the event.
This year, a number of steps have been taken to ensure less disappointment for the anglers.

One of the revised rules is - anglers can use multiple hooks and throw their bait till an unlimited distance. Their chances will be bright if the range of the bait is more. This will help them net more number of fish. It is usual for anglers to hurl the bait at a distance of around 60 feet. This earlier was two hooks till a distance of 30 feet.
Moreover, JAC has released around 2.5 lakh fish fries in the 20-acre lake last month. Obviously, anglers are assured of hooking and bringing in better.
The club is charging Rs 1,200 per contestant and will provide anglers with a fishing platform and lunch packet.

Too many trouts spoil the fun for anglers in River Avon in Hampshire

The anglers usually sit for hours on end with their lines cast into the river waiting for that thrilling moment when a fish bites the bait. But, right now, there are too many trouts in the River Avon in Hampshire and that has spoilt the fun.
This is because 60,000 farm trout have escaped into one of Britain's best fishing rivers and the charm of fishing is lost. One of the anglers caught 52 of the farmed fish in a single morning, with 20 from consecutive casts.

Fishermen who have returned to the banks for the new season are reeling in so many trout in Hampshire's River Avon that they are unable to catch their targets. The bait meant for outsmarting wily coarse fish like chub and perch over several patient hours are going waste because they are easily gobbled up by the gullible farmed trout.
It is believed that the spotty trout have escaped from a local fish farm. These trouts are a non-native species and, if anyone catches one of these, he is is not allowed to return it to the waterway and has to take it home.
The problem with so many trouts is that it leads to an ecological imbalance since the trout feasts on the small fry of coarse fish. As a result, the future population of native species is affected, especially roach which has been in perilous decline in the Avon.
Since it is impossible to recover all the trout which have spread for several miles up and down the Avon at Fordingbridge, officials have suggested that members of Christchurch Angling Club hook out as many trout as possible in order to resolve the problem. Authorities are investigating the source from where the fish have escaped.
