Delhi is 9th most polluted city in the world as per WHO

WHO has released details of polluted cities and India is home to four of the five cities in the world with the worst air pollution. While WHO experts admit that India faces a "huge challenge", there are many countries that are so bad that they have no monitoring system and, hence, are not included in its ranking.

WHO has placed Zabol in Iran as the city with the dirtiest air - Zabol suffers from months of dust storms in the summer, and it recorded a so-called PM2.5 measure of 217. The next four cities are all Indian cities namely Gwalior, Allahabad, Patna and Raipur. At 9th place is New Delhi - measured by the amount of particulate matter under 2.5 micrograms found in every cubic metre of air, with an annual average PM2.5 measurement of 122.
These tiny particulate matter can lead to diseases like lung cancer, strokes and heart disease in the long term. Moreover, polluted and poor quality of air can result in health problems and trigger symptoms of heart attacks that kill more rapidly. As per WHO, more than 7 million premature deaths occur every year due to air pollution, and 3 million of them are due to poor quality of outdoor air. The ranking of New Delhi has improved when compared to 2014 because it has tried to tackle its toxic air by limiting the use of private cars on the road for short periods.
Common causes of air pollution are too many cars on the roads, especially diesel-fuelled vehicles, the heating and cooling of big buildings, waste management, agriculture and the use of coal or diesel generators for power.

Pollution levels become a major worry in Delhi

People in the capital New Delhi are in major trouble over he level of pollution that the capital is witnessing. Residents have complained about their eyes stinging and watering and of an uncomfortable feeling of "being choked". This effect is attributed to a heavy vehicular traffic in the run-up to Diwali. This has added to the woes of the administration because this is added to the respirable particles that had accumulated in the past few days from the burning of crop stubble in the neighboring states.

Delhi is already considered to be one of the global cities which has the worst air to breathe. It had seen levels of PM2.5 (fine, respirable particles) reach an astounding 750 micrograms per cubic metres. This was 12 times the safety range for the pollutant in India and 30 times the World Health Organization's global safety benchmark.
The levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were also very high during the day.
The fact remains that the pollution in the capital of New Delhi is far from satisfactory and efforts must be taken to reduce the levels. Such pollution leads to disruption in travel by not only air and rail but by road as well.

A rat in the cabin of an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner forced the aircraft to return back to base after four hours into the flight AI-123 from New Delhi to Milan. The rat was spotted by some passengers and crew members. Since such sighting means the aircraft must land immediately, the captain had no other alternative.

At the time, the aircraft was over Pakistan airspace and needed to jettison furl to ensure a safe landing. It had been filled up for the long flight to Italy hence, a large quantity of fuel had to be jettisoned.
Rat menace in aircraft is not new – it happens all over the world. But, this happens to be the second time in as many months that AI flights from Delhi faced a rodent problem. In May-end, its aircraft had to be grounded in Leh after some rats were spotted on it.
In the opinion of experts, rats usually get on board an aircraft via the catering vans. The rodents follow the large storage cases in which food trays are kept. Food keeps getting dropped and the rats get on the high lifts that take those storage cases to aircraft and, subsequently, remain there.
