Seven Humboldt penguins die in Calgary Zoo under mysterious circumstances

The Calgary Zoo in Canada has lost seven of its Humboldt penguins under mysterious circumstances - the zoo authorities have launched an investigation into this “devastating” drowning of its penguins. It seems the penguins were discovered in the back holding area of its "Penguin Plunge" exhibit.
As revealed by the director of animal care of the zoo, it is not known what caused the deaths and it is devastating news.

The penguins were aged between six months and seven years and the zoo's veterinary team has completed autopsies on the penguins to determine the cause of their death. They had, apparently, inhaled a bunch of water and for whatever reason drowned.
There were a total of 22 birds within the Humboldt colony, along with three other species of penguin in the exhibit.
Incidentally, in recent years, several animals have died at Calgary Zoo under mysterious circumstances. In 2013, a penguin died in a "freak accident" after it swallowed a stick that was nearly a foot long. And, earlier this year, an otter drowned after it got entangled in a pair of pants it was given by a zookeeper.

Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire shuts their Humboldt penguin enclosure

Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire is home to dozens of the hand-reared Humboldt penguins and some of them have died after contracting the avian strain of the disease. Hence, the authorities of the safari park has been forced to shut down their penguin enclosure following death of a number of the birds due to malaria from mosquitoes.

Visitors to the park were left devastated after zoo keepers at the park shut Penguin Island in order to allow staff space and time to care for the remaining birds.
This breed of Humboldt penguins are usually seen around coastal areas of Peru and Chile and are now officially listed as 'vulnerable' by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
