Tragedy in Colombia - suspension bridge fails, at least 7 killed


It was a tragedy of no mean proportion when a suspension bridge, popular with tourists in a rural area of central Colombia failed leaving at least seven people dead with another 14 injured. The bridge is located near the city of Villavicencio and is a major tourist attraction.
In the opinion of the authorities, the bridge may have twisted and turned upside down due to overload during a busy three-day holiday weekend.

The injured are being treated at a local hospital and, it is feared that the death toll could rise because the injuries suffered by people spilled 80 meters (265 feet) into a gorge were severe. It has been confirmed by firefighters at the rescue scene that the dead included five adults and two minors.
