These species in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR), Pollachi, have to struggle for survival with the available food and trees - consequently, they are displaying unusual behavior. While they have located alternative sources of food as also alternate trees for nesting, their fight against genetic conditioning is making their existence a struggle.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 21 January 2017.
The lion-tailed macaque (Macaca silenus) has a mane of hair and a tail that makes it look like a lion. It has begun to display behavior normally associated with common monkeys or bonnet macaques - these have begun to roam the streets in search of food waste and leftovers.
The hornbill (Buceros bicornis) population is still not in decline in Anamalai but their loss of habitat is a matter of concern. These birds have had to adapt to a changing environment. These birds are large and they have begun to build nests in silver oak trees. They have also identified an alternative food source in the fruit of the shrub-like ficus tree. They also eat the fruit of the umbrella tree (Maesopsis eminii) and this is a new affair.
