Goshalas in Odisha will get funds from the government to take care of their cows


The Odisha government has decided to extend financial support to registered private Goshalas (protective shelters for cows) operating in the state in order to save the cattle from cruelty. The assistance would be at the rate of Rs 16,000 per cattle per annum.

As announced by Secretary Fisheries and Animal Resource Development, this financial support would be extended from current year and the Goshalas would be provided this financial grant to ensure proper food and shelter to stray cattle. At present there are 26 registered goshalas in the state and these are an integral part of the States diversified cultural heritage. These domestic animals provide economic and social security to the human beings.
The financial assistance to be provided by government would be an incentive for the private Goshalas and would meet a part of their total expenses for the animals.Such financial support is being introduced for the first time in the state. Those registered Goshalas who are willing to avail assistance under the scheme will have to apply to Chief District Veterinary Officer of their districts.
The by-products of Goshalas such as the cow dung, urine and Panchagavya (cow milk, curd, ghee, cow urine and cow dung) can be used as medicines, manure, disinfectants, organic pesticides. Therefore the goshalas can tie up with various bio-processing units that are coming up in the State.
