This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 16 June 2016.
The vehicle population of Bengaluru was 61 lakh as of March 31, 2016, while Karnataka has 1.62 crore vehicles. West Bengaluru has highest number of two-wheelers at 7.2 lakh, followed by the south with 7 lakh and east with 6.8 lakh motorbikes and scooters. Of course, East Bengaluru's RTO has registered the most cars (2.2 lakh) compared to other parts during the same period.
In the opinion of experts, the main reason for reliance on private vehicles is the absence of a robust, seamless, and comfortable public transport system. The transport department wants to restrict registration of vehicles to two cars per household. But, this is easier said than done because it requires amendment to the Motor Vehicles Act which has to be done by the central government.
