This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 15 April 2016.
As per records maintained and released in the Road Accident Report (2014), published by the ministry, a total of 4,726 lives were lost in crashes due to humps while another 6,672 people died in accidents caused as a result of potholes and speed breakers.
The ministry wants details of rumble strips that have been laid with approval because, at many places local authorities construct the road bumps or speed breakers to check vehicular speed in spite of existing guidelines on size etcetera. The function of national highways is to facilitate movement of traffic and, speed breakers can be a source of serious hazards and accidents to the fast-moving traffic.
Properly designed rumple strips are necessary at locations like sharp curves, on level crossings and congested or accident-prone areas where control of speed is unavoidable.
