Clean-up on Queen's 90th birthday - litterbugs will face fines of up to £150

Britain, like India, has been bitten by the clean-up bug. On the occasion of the Queen's 90th birthday, a massive cleanup operation is berg undertaken and heavy fines would be imposed on litterbugs. Fines for dropping rubbish will rise to £150 as campaigners lead a nationwide clean-up. Ministers would publish a strategy that will 'create a lasting clutter-free legacy for England'.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 2 January 2015.
This is based on protest by those who have called on the public to challenge people who drop litter. The usual penalties imposed by councils for offenders range from £50 to £80 but the Department for Communities and Local Government plans to recommend higher fixed penalties of up to £150. The minimum fine is also set to double from £50 to £100. Hopefully, such steep fines would act as a deterrent.
As the Communities minister Marcus Jones has indicated - dropping litter is the kind of anti-social behavior. Apart from being an act of thoughtless, it is selfish and ruins shared spaces for everyone. Moreover, litter clearance and disposal costs hundreds of millions of pounds for councils every year - this money could have been better utilized to provide vital services.
