Rooftop Solar power gets a boost under National Solar Mission

The Central government has directed its ministries, States and all educational institutions across the country to make use of the rooftops available with them to install grid connected solar systems. The target set by the New and Renewable Energy Ministry is 40,000 MW of grid connected rooftop solar power generation capacity by 2022 as envisaged under the National Solar Mission.
This has been reported in ibnlive.com dated 6 September 2015.
It is estimated that about ten square meter space is required for installing one kWp of solar rooftop system. Such a system has advantages like it can help to reduce electricity bills apart from cutting down carbon emissions that is on the rise due to conventional sources like coal.
The government would be funding 15 per cent of the benchmark cost for installation of grid connected rooftop solar system/project in four main categories of building namely, residential, institutional, government and social sector.
Under residential class, all types of residential buildings are covered. The institutional category cover schools, health institutions including medical colleges and hospitals, educational institution (public & private) and R&D institutes.
The government category has central and state buildings covering all offices, PSUs and government owned societies, companies or organizations apart from all Panchayati Raj buildings.
The social sector covers all community centers, welfare homes, old age homes, orphanages, common service centers, common workshop for artisans or craftsman, facilities for usage of communities and any other establishment for common use. All of these are eligible to get financial assistance for installing grid connected rooftop solar systems.
