Under this proposed policy, they would get a monthly salary of Rs 9000 plus perquisites like compulsory paid annual leave every year apart from maternity leave.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 17 August 2015.
Once the policy is implemented, the employer, the employee and the intermediary agency that connects the two would have to enter into a tripartite agreement, which will have legal sanctity.
In India, domestic helps are usually girls and women and it is an unorganized sector. They are employed to clean utensils, sweep and mop the floors, wash clothes and other such jobs. They are mostly from local neighborhoods and, for many of them, it is a traditional family work culture. When the elders get old, they transfer the work to their juniors. They did not earn any regular salary but the rates depended on the ones prevalent in the area.
In some cities, they had agitated and managed to secure benefits like an annual bonus, a set of clothes on major festive occasions like Durga Puja and Diwali and leave when they fell sick. Some would even get a day off every week. Anyway, once the new system takes effect, it would be a huge benefit to this category of people and they can take pride in what they do.
