Deputy CM of Telangana talks of demolishing the Charminar of Hyderabad

It is strange that anyone can ever think of demolishing the 400-year-old historic monument Charminar of Hyderabad which is the identity of the city. It is all the more strange when the proposal comes from none other than Telangana deputy chief minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali.
It seems he is afraid that if the iconic Charminar could pose a major threat if it becomes structurally weak over a period of time. He made these observations while interacting with the media in Warangal on the proposed demolition of the Osmania General Hospital (OGH).
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 2 August 2015.
His statement has been criticized by eminent personalities - Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member V Hanumantha Rao has remarked that it would be tantamount to razing a heritage building. He asked the question - should the Taj Mahal also be demolished since it too has become "old".
As a conservation expert has said – it is our duty is to protect heritage and pass it on to the next generation and our responsibility to see to it that the next generation receives it in a better condition. We do not have any right to demolish something which is not ours because we are the guardians of heritage.
Incidentally, the Telangana government had used the heritage structure as a part of its monogram and, hence, should not entertain such thoughts.
Of course, the deputy CM has, like many other leaders before him, said he was misquoted and his comments were blown out of proportion. This is what happens to such foot-in-the-mouth comments that reeks of ignorance.
