Cod fish, hunted to near extinction, makes a remarkable comeback

Cod fish had been Britain’s favorite. Once, it used to be a part of the British diet but, there were fears that it was on its way to extinction. However, things have improved thanks to setting of catch limits by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea.
This agency collates information on fish stocks across Europe and advises the UK government accordingly. As per its latest information, the cod numbers are increasing because of the strict catch limits of 2006.
This has been reported in dailymail.co.uk dated 20 August 2015.
Fisheries have indicated ‘strong increases’ in cod stocks in the North Sea and a new Europe-wide cod quota for 2016 to over 40,000 tonnes of fish could be on the cards – that would be an increase of 15 per cent on 2015.
Incidentally, the cod is cumbersome and greedy species and it keeps close to the shore with its mouth agape. It keeps swallowing anything in its way, including baby cod.
It hardly uses its muscles and produces its own anti-freeze which allows it to live in very cold waters but its appetite and slothness make it an all-too-easy catch.
