Nipping terrorism in the bud – new checks on passports of people leaving UK

#ChannelTunnel #passport #Folkestone #Dover #HomeOffice In view of recent instances of people from Britain and other European countries going to Syria to join up with terrorist groups, Britain has introduced more rigorous checks on passports of the travelers. The intention is to nip the risks of terrorism in the bud. This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 8 April 2015.
While the checks at airports would not pose too much of delays, there were apprehensions that delays could be encountered at the approaches to the port of Dover and at the nearby Channel Tunnel terminal in Folkestone. However, that has proved groundless on the first day of passport checks for travelers who are leaving Britain.
This has been confirmed by ferry companies and Eurotunnel who have reported a trouble-free day. Eurotunnel went live with the checks at 6am and requested passengers to have their passports ready to hand over for checks – it seems only one passenger had left it in the boot of their vehicle.
As per plans, the checking was supposed to be 25% of passports for the first month that would be checked fully and the percentage would gradually be increased to 50% in May and 100% by the middle of June. But, Eurotunnel decided to implement full checks from day one.
The Home Office feels that check of passports would help the police and security services to track the movements of known criminals and terrorists and, simultaneously, provide vital information that would confirm the exit of a person from the UK.
