The report indicates that branded painkillers use ‘clever marketing’ so that the patients spend up to ten times more than they would on unbranded products. Moreover, some manufacturers use the same pills in different packaging throughout their ranges to fool the customers.
In the opinion of Dr Chris Van Tulleken who has made these revelations, the UK over-the-counter medicines market is worth £2.5 billion. The market includes painkillers and anti-fungal creams and brands vie for attention with brightly colored attractive packaging. The promises they make are questionable under scrutiny.
Moreover, he has found that different branded packets all have an identical product license number – from this it can be concluded that the packaging may appear to be different but the contents are exactly the same pills.
Dr Chris Van Tullekan is an infectious diseases specialist. He has warned that as users, we need to worry less about convenience and more about the effectiveness of medicines.
