This has been reported in news.sky.com dated 23 March 2015.
The warning has been published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases journal and the reasons attributed by scientists is that the warmer temperatures and more rainfall - both outcomes of climate change - could provide ideal conditions in the UK for breeding of these unwelcome visitors. Tis would be especially true for southern England.
The climate in the UK is believed to be suitable for mosquitoes that carry West Nile Virus. This is an infection that results in a flu-like illness which could involve fatality. Recently a species of Culex mosquito which are known to be the main carrier of West Nile Virus in Europe was discovered in Kent.
Compared to this, a bigger threat is of the Asian tiger mosquito – this spreads dengue fever and chikungunya and both these can cause serious illnesses. Dengue fever can be fatal.
Hence, it is best to be prepared with mosquito nets and repellants and, of course, following general precautions to prevent breeding of mosquitos.
