However, NASA may have to axe its long-lived Mars rover Opportunity mission in 2016 since there is no funds allocated for it in the White House's fiscal year budget request. Of course, the space agency has said they have not yet axed Opportunity or the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO).
The $18.5 billion budget request, is believed to include funding for developing a mission to Jupiter's moon Europa, apart from the agency's asteroid redirect mission (ARM).
The major areas of focus for NASA would be to continue to prepare for a manned mission to Mars, as also developing advanced solar electric propulsion systems that would be necessary for an asteroid redirect mission.
