Instances of drug seizures increasing in UK prisons

#drugsinprisons #ukprisons #cannabis #syntheticdrugs As per latest figures released by the Ministry of Justice, there has been an increase in the number of illegal drug seizures in prisons in England and Wales. The statistics reveal that there were almost 4,500 instances of substances being taken from inmates in 2013/14 as compared with just under 3,800 in 2010/11.
These figures are given in response to a parliamentary question.
Of course, a spokesman of the Ministry of Justice has indicated that the rise should not be construed as a failure of the government’s prisons drugs strategy. In fact, this can be attributed to the robust security measures introduced that include the use of intelligence-led searches and specially trained drugs dogs.
The number of prisoners testing positive for drugs had fallen significantly over the past 15 years and, legal highs such as a synthetic drug named “spice” has become popular in jails in the recent years – this drug mimics the active ingredient in cannabis.
Problems with synthetic drugs are that, while the effects of drugs like heroin or cocaine were generally known, that is not the case with synthetic drugs. The reason is the varying chemical composition of legal highs. The results are that those who take such drugs behave in extremely unconventional ways.
