As a result of the new measures, US citizens can start to bring home small amounts of Cuban cigars after more than a half-century ban and this takes effect from Friday. This move is seen as a first step towards thawing of relations between the two nations after five decades of hostility.
This decision has come within three days of US officials confirming the release of 53 political prisoners that Cuba had promised to free.
President Barack Obama has plans to re-establish diplomatic relations with Cuba but, only Congress can end the five-decade embargo. However, several measures have been announced – these are giving permission to Americans to use credit cards in Cuba and US companies to export telephone, computer and internet technologies.
Limited investments in some small business are permitted and, while tourist travel has not yet been sanctioned, Americans who are authorized to visit Cuba do not need to apply for special licenses.
