Tourists to Auckland to note - soon vehicles will be banned from the summit of volcanoes

It is not good news for tourist to New Zealand – those tourists who want to drive up to the summits of volcanoes in Auckland would soon face disappointment because plans are afoot to ban the driving of vehicles to the summit of Auckland's volcanic cones.
It seems coaches and cars will be permitted to drive halfway up the volcano to a kiosk area where there is a parking and turning area and people will then have to foot the remaining 200m to the summit. In the case of transportation of the elderly and disabled to the summit, and rules relating to cycling and mountain-biking, details are being worked out. It may be recalled that buses, which carry almost half of the 1.2 million people who visit the mountain each year, were stopped in 2011 from driving all the way to the summit – these buses can go as far as the kiosk.
The ban would start with all vehicles up Mt Eden with a ban that would cover the summits of other volcanoes that have accessible roads like One Tree Hill, Mt Wellington, Mt Albert, Mt Roskill and Mt Victoria.
As per reports, a new authority to manage 14 volcanic cones has granted approval in principle to extend a 2011 ban on buses driving to the summit of Mt Eden/Maungawhau to all vehicles. It is understood that a detailed report on how and when to implement the vehicle ban would be presented to the Tupuna Maunga o Tamaki Makaurau Authority in April for a final decision.
