It seems she was fed up with her domestic problems about her son's poor health and financial difficulties and, hence, rang up the number of the self-proclaimed Godman that she had seen in a suburban local train. She hoped that Raja Shah Baba, the Godman, would be in a position to deliver her from her suffering.
However, after a number of visits to the Godman and several "rituals" later, she discovered the truth – he did not possess any godly powers but was a fraudster. In the bargain, she was left poorer by gold worth Rs 1.65 lakh.
Fortunately, the police, with the help of a female officer as a decoy, finally managed to bust the bluff and arrested four people over the last week though the kingpin is still at large.
The modus operandi was simple – the alleged Godman asked her to place all her gold ornaments in an earthen pot and dip them in curd. Then he, accompanied by an accomplice, came to her house and asked to remove the curd and clean the ornaments and get ready to perform the puja.
Two days later, he returned, and covered a fish tank with a cloth, showered it with and switched off all lights. Next they placed the pot with the ornaments on the fish tank and carried out the puja after which he put a lid on the pot and told the family not to open it for 61 days.
It was only then that the woman realized that she had been taken for a ride.
