This festival has opened in Goa on 20th November 2014 and would continue till 30th November 2014 - actors Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan were present at the inauguration. It was here that Amitabh Bachchan handed over the Centenary award for Film personality of the Year to Rajinikanth and added that while cricket is religion in India, the cinema has become the country's "alternative religion".
Also present on the occasion were dignitaries like the Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley, the Chief Minister of Goa Laxmikant Parsekar and the newly-installed union Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar. Incidentally, Parikkar was till recently the Chief Minister of Goa and relinquished his post on joining Modi’s cabinet at the Center. As per information, the IFFI will be held in the Dr Shama Prasad Mukherjee Stadium in Panaji, the state capital and a total of 179 films from 75 countries across different categories would be screened – these would include World Cinema (61 films), Masterstrokes (11 films), Festival Kaleidoscope (20 films), Soul of Asia (7 films), Documentaries (6 films), and Animated Films (6 films).
Two Indian films would compete for the coveted Golden Peacock awards at the festival.
The President was the opening film of the fest – it was directed by Iranian film director Mohsen Makhmalbaf. And, as per schedule, the closing film would be The Grandmaster. This is directed by Chinese director Wong Kar-wai of Hong Kong – he would be receiving the lifetime achievement award. Incidentally, China is the country of focus for this festival.
It seems the audience would get a chance to see some restored classics of veteran actors Charlie Chaplin and Francois Truffaut which will be screened at IFFI 2014. Also, special homage films on artistes like Suchitra Sen, Zohra Sehgal and Robin Williams would be screened and a special tribute will be paid to actor Farooq Sheikh.
