A 4-Kg hilsa fish sold for Rs 22,000 in Kolkata

Jamai Shashthi is a festival of Bengalis where the taste buds of the son-in-law are pampered with the best of the best. And, on this occasion, a hilsa fish was sold for Rs 22000 - it was a prize catch weighing 4-Kg and was from Myanmar, as disclosed by the fish vendor.
This has been reported in hindustantimes.com dated 10 June 2016.
The price paid for the fish is an all time record as vouched for by the traders at the wholesale market in Howrah where the fish was sold. The buyer was a retailer from Gariahat Market in posh South Kolkata and it was obvious that some lucky son-in-law would get an opportunity to taste it. As the vendor explained - he had bought the fish from a company of Myanmar and, when he put it up for auction, the bidders were desperate to lay hands on it. Since there was no Hilsa coming from Bangladesh, the demand for the king of fish was obviously high.

Emergency declared in Myanmar due to floods that have left at least 27 dead

Myanmar has been blasted by heavy rain and landslides for weeks and the wind and rain from Cyclone Komen have added to the damages. Death has been reported of at least 27 persons. The director of disaster management with Myanmar's Red Cross feels that the country was facing "a big disaster" because of more rain over the coming weeks. The Red Cross was trying to assess the extent of damage to refugee camps in Rakhine.
This has been reported in bbc.com dated 1 August 2015.
Myanmar's president Thein Sein has declared a state of emergency in four regions namely Chin, Magwe, Sagaing and Rakhine after the heavy floods. The states of Chin and Rakhine are believed to be the worst affected.
Thousands of people have gone for shelter in monasteries, but it seems people from the Rohingya Muslim minority were turned away from some shelters in abandoned schools and community centers in the western Rakhine state.
As per information with the United Nations says 140,000 people in Rakhine are putting up in camps near Sittwe, the capital of the region - most of them are Rohingya Muslims.

Over 600 stranded migrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar rescued by local fishermen

Migrants trying to escape from Bangladesh and Myanmar are finding themselves in literally deep waters because the people smugglers have left them stranded in the sea and in the latest rescue efforts, over 600 of them have landed in Indonesia's Aceh province.
They were rescued by local fishing boats as reported in bbc.com dated 16 May 2015.
Thousands of these migrants, mainly from the Rohingya Muslim minority in Myanmar, have been abandoned at sea by people smugglers and nearly 2,000 of them have already come ashore in Aceh. They are being provided with medical assistance and food.
Subsequently, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand have been turning the boats away.
However, 210 of the latest arrivals that landed in Aceh were from Myanmar and 395 from Bangladesh. As per medical officials, eight of the persons on board were critically ill.
The boat was heavily packed and had been abandoned by people smugglers who also disabled the engine. The migrants included women and babies and they had revealed that they had no food or water and that 10 of them had already died. The UN refugee agency has requested neighboring countries to co-ordinate a search and rescue operation because nearly 8,000 migrants are believed to be trapped on boats in the area.

#solarimpulse2 #varanasi #myanmar #BertrandPiccard Solar Impulse 2 (Si2), the solar powered aircraft which is currently on its maiden flight round the world has left Varanasi and is now headed for Mandalay in Myanmar as reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 19 March 2015.
The Si2 had landed in Varanasi on Wednesday evening and the next leg of the flight would be piloted by Bertrand Piccard.
Solar Impulse 2 does not carry any fuel and had landed in Ahmedabad on March 10 around midnight. It was stationed there for six days and had maintained a minimum altitude of around 5,200 metres on its flight to Varanasi.
The Si2, built to fly around the world without using a drop of fuel, has also been designed to showcase the effectiveness of clean technologies and the importance of sustainability.
The aircraft had taken off from Muscat on March 9, flew over Pakistan airspace before entering the Indian airspace over the Arabian Sea towards Gujarat. The Aditya Birla Group had hosted the flight in Ahmedabad.
It is fitted with a total of 17,248 solar cells and four lithium batteries, the weight of Si2 is 633 kg. The batteries supply the electric motors with enough renewable energy for a 24x7 flight, up to an altitude of 8,500 metres. This altitude is less than the height of Mount Everest which stands at 8,848 metres.
