Teenage girl jumps off moving bus in Mehsana to avoid molestation

In spite of innumerable drives by the police and law enforcement authorities to ensure safety of girls on the move, incidents continue to happen and there is the invisible threat of the worst kind hanging over the heads of girls and members of the fairer sex. The latest example is of a teenager of Mehsana, Gujarat, who jumped off a moving bus to escape possible molestation.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 23 March 2016.
It was supposed to have been a routine ride to school in a state transport bus for the 14-year-old class IX girl in Mehsana but, it turned out to be one of terror. Terrified by alleged sexual remarks by the bus conductor, who also tried to molest her, the girl jumped off the moving bus and got hurt. Subsequently, she lodged a complaint with police quoting the bus number that she had noted down.
The 49-year-old bus conductor has been identified, arrested and booked under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO).
The girl had boarded the Halol-Vadnagar bus run by GSRTC from her village Patiya in Kheralu, Mehsana and in her complaint she had indicated that on boarding the bus she found only two passengers inside. Therefore, instead of sitting, she decided to stand near the door.
The conductor began insisting that she sit down and also made some sexual remarks. Initially she ignored the remarks, but when he continued to make sexually explicit comments, and tried to come near her, she opened the door and jumped off the moving bus. She was injured and taken to hospital and, after being discharged, she filed complaint against the bus conductor.

Taxi service only for women on the anvil of New Delhi Municipal Corporation

#NDMC #childmolestation #womensafety #internationalwomensday In order to make the city of New Delhi more safe for women because of instances of atrocities committed on women, the New Delhi Municipal Corporation has taken a decision to operate a women only taxi service where the drivers would be women.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 16 March 2015.
The service named ‘Shakti’ had been scheduled to begin on 8 March, International Women’s Day but due to shortage of cabs, it has been postponed to April- it seems a minimum of 100 cabs are necessary for launching such projects but the NDMC has hardly 20 cabs. Therefore, a pilot project would be started with these 20 cabs.
This rivers of this women only cab service will be women drivers and they would be recruited from the technical institute run by NDMC. The tariffs are likely to be in sync with the transport department rates.
Moreover, keeping the safety of school children in mind, NDMC would be recruiting women drivers for all the buses that carry children to the schools run by it. This is because children are easy targets for crimes such as molestation.
Hence, women drivers who possess commercial licenses have already been selected and they would begin working from next month.
