Flamingoes killed in Bhavnagar after coming in contact with high-voltage transmission lines

It was a tragedy when at least 18 flamingoes were killed when they flew into a high-voltage electricity transmission line in Kumbarwada, Bhavnagar. This is not the first time that such an incident has happened in the area - in 2010, more than 400 birds were electrocuted in Khadir.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 12 December 2016.
Incidentally, the area, which has a colony of birds, especially flamingoes, is an experimental salt farm that belongs to the Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute. But, a high-tension power line has been laid there for a local factory.
This group of around 20 flamingoes came into contact with the high-tension line. While two of them have been rescued and are in the possession of the forest department, two were dragged away by dogs. In all, a total of 16 dead birds have been recovered so far by the department.
An earlier report on the subject has indicated that the collision of flamingoes with electric lines was noticed repeatedly at Nirma saltpans and Kumbharwada sewage pond in Bhavnagar district. The incidences of such collisions is frequent and the local fishermen scan areas with overhead wires and "collect the birds for consumption".
There are seven such sites in Kutch, Bhavnagar and Jamnagar where high-tension cables run close to flamingo sites.
