Karnataka has surplus elephants, plans to gift them to other willing states

In view of the increasing human-elephant conflict, Karnataka wants to gift surplus elephants in its captivity, to states where their population is less. A dozen elephants are being shifted to Uttarakhand - it has shown interest and wants to adopt them to ensure the safety of tigers in Corbett Tiger Reserve.
The Zoo Authority of India and forests and environment ministry have already given clearance for this transfer.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 25 November 2016.
Karnataka has requested other states to adopt the captive elephants because they are reeling under food and water shortage. At present there are nearly 200 jumbos housed in the state's four elephant camps. These have been captured by the forest department following reports of rogue behavior, raiding crops and killing people.
The state intends to get dispatch at least half the jumbos elsewhere.
The governments of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh have also shown interest in adopting captive elephants.
