Generosity, even in the form of tips, can mark a person out as a crime target because greed makes many overstep the line and they begin to think about possibilities of laying hands on more. To be generous is ingrained in the human psyche and, at times, one doles out large tips to get extra attention or to prove that he is different from others.
And, that is what happened in this case.
It seems the elderly couple, a relative of a dentist, used to pay the rickshaw pullers in the area double the normal fare and the word got around that they were loaded with money. Therefore, the robbers ganged up and raided the house. They forced their way in after one of them hit the old man on the head when he opened the door. They then held the others at gunpoint, cleaned out the almirahs, and fled after locking the three up in a bathroom.
The rickshaw-puller had been in jail for a petty crime a few months ago where he befriended another whose eight-year sentence was about to end - and, the two engineered the robbery.
