Chinese couple sell their 18-day-old newborn daughter online for $3530 to buy an iPhone

A Chinese couple is believed to have sold their new born 18-day-old baby daughter online for $3530 to buy an iPhone. The father of the child, from Fujian Province in country's southeast apparently found a buyer on the social media site QQ. The father intended to buy an iPhone and a motorbike with the money. The mother did part-time jobs while the father spent his most of time in internet cafes.
This has been reported in zeenews.india.com dated 9 March 2016.
It seems the two of them had met at work back in 2013 and, after plans for their marriage had to be shelved with neither party meeting the legal age, their child was born because of an unwanted pregnancy. Both parents were 19 at the time and were also short of money. The addition to the family was a financial burden and the father took up the opportunity to sell off the daughter and buy the material possessions he desired.
The mother had fled after the baby was sold, but was tracked down by police investigating the illegal sale. She has received a two-and-a-half year suspended sentence but the father has been given three years in jail. As to the baby, she is still with the buyer's sister. The buyer allegedly turned himself into police after acquiring the infant.
