Tourist boat catches fire off New Zealand coast - 60 on board jump to safety


A tourist boat caught fire of the coast of New Zealand coast - there were 53 passengers and 7 crew members on board and all 60 of them jumped to safety. The vessel - called Peejay - was returning from White Island, which is home to the most active volcano in New Zealand, to the town of Whakatane when it suddenly caught fire.

The engine room was on fire and it quickly engulfed the complete boat which was just over half a mile from the shore when it got into trouble. All 60 persons were rescued and brought to safety before the boat sank. The rescue was done by a coastguard boat and a number of small local vessels that went out to assist in recovering passengers and crew from the water.
A helicopter was also deployed to carried out a sweep of the water to confirm that everyone had been rescued. The passenger manifest was also checked against those rescued from the water to account for everyone. Two people were taken to hospital for treatment for minor injuries and smoke inhalation.
White Island is located nearly 31 miles off the North Island coast in the Bay of Plenty and has active volcanoes and is a popular tourist destination.
