US critical of religious freedom in India – India downplays the report

#DavidSaperstein #religiousfreedom #NarendraModi David Saperstein, US Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom, has said that the US will encourage the Modi government to turn the ideals of "tolerance and civility" into reality across the country. He made these comments soon after the controversy over beef incidents when Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for civility and tolerance between the different communities.
David Saperstein has also indicated that the United States would encourage the Prime Minister and the government to take those ideals and turn them into reality all across the country and convert words into action.
This has been reported in timesofindia.indiatimes.com dated 16 October 2015.
The US Congressional report on International Religious Freedom 2014 has said that India had witnessed incidents like killings, arrests, riots and coerced religious conversion which are religious motivated.
Given the reach of the internet and the different media outlets all over the world, any incident gets reported, visuals seen and commented upon – hence, it becomes difficult to deny such happenings. However, a spokesman of the Ministry of External Affairs MEA has made light on the US observations.
The official version of the MEA is that the report is internal to the US administration. The Constitution of India guarantees equal religious, social, political rights to all its citizens including minorities. Moreover, any abuses are handled by the internal process of the government and these include the judiciary, vibrant press, civil society, National Human Rights Commission.
